Free Eagle, who produced one of the best performances of Royal Ascot 2015, will take his chance in Sunday’s Qatar Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe at Longchamp. Royal Ascot hospitality guests saw the four-year-old claim victory in the Group One Prince of Wales’s Stakes and will know he has the class to take a race of this nature.
On that day he beat multiple group winner The Grey Gatsby in a superb contest. With the ground drying out all the time, Dermot Weld has seen fit to send his stable star over to Paris for one of the worlds most famous and prestigious races.
Weld said: “It’s looking likely Free Eagle will run in the Arc. He’s very well and I’m very happy with him. We don’t have to make a final decision until early on Friday morning but it’s looking like he will run.”
The race is shaping up to be one of the best races of the last decade, with some of the worlds best horses set to compete.
Two-time Arc heroine Treve will be bidding to make history as she looks to win the race for a third time. She will be taking on Derby hero Golden Horn who has been supplemented for the race after his victory in the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes.
There will be no Arc for Jack Hobbs however, with trainer John Gosden preferring to target the Irish Derby winner at the Qipco Champion Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot later this month.
He said: “Jack Hobbs worked nicely yesterday but as indicated earlier we plan is to run him in the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot which is 13 days after the Arc.”
We all wait with bated breath for what should be a classic contest.
